One of last season’s most anticipated new dramas was CBS’ first superhero series in over ten years. Starring Glee alum Melissa Benoist as the popular DC Comics character Kara Zor-El, Supergirl became the fall’s highest rated premiere, before settling in at around 7.7 million viewers a week. Many critics praised the series’ heart and feminist slant, including Kara’s strong friendships with her sister Alex Danvers (played by Chyler Leigh) and boss Cat Grant (played by Calista Flockhart).

Yet not all reviews were entirely positive, as many critiqued the series’ storylines and cheesy special effects. At the end of the season, Supergirl was on the bubble, and no one was sure if it’d be renewed.
