Joel McHale to Guest Star on ‘The X-Files’ Revival
The truth is getting closer: FOX’s six-episode X-Files revival has cast its first guest star, less than a week before production is scheduled to begin in Vancouver. Community actor Joel McHale is joining David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson on the limited series. He’ll play Tad O’Malley, the anchor of a popular conservative Internet news network who becomes an unlikely ally for Mulder. Creator Chris Carter is reportedly a fan of McHale’s work and decided to cast the actor after seeing his dramatic turn on Sons of Anarchy. The X-Files premieres Sunday, Jan. 24. [THR]
John Noble Joins ‘Elementary’ as Series Regular
With Sleepy Hollow behind him, Fringe star John Noble has found his next full-time gig. He’s joined the cast of Elementary as a series regular, playing Sherlock Holmes’ wealthy, estranged father. The character, who was instrumental in setting up Sherlock’s first stint in rehab three years ago, will first appear in the season 4 premiere. Mr. Holmes arrives in New York City to deal with the aftermath of his son’s (Jonny Lee Miller) recent relapse. [TVLine]
‘Tangled’ to Become Disney Channel Animated Series
Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi are coming back for more Tangled adventures. The two actors will reprise their roles as Rapunzel and Eugene (aka Flynn Rider) in a new Disney Channel animated series, due out in 2017. Set between the 2010 hit movie and its 2012 mini-sequel, Tangled Ever After, the new series follows Rapunzel as she reacquaints herself with her parents, kingdom and the people of Corona. Now a free woman, she decides to put her crown and impending marriage on hold to go out and experience life. [THR]
James Wan Will Direct ‘Aquaman’ and ‘Robotech’
Furious 7 and The Conjuring director James Wan can apparently do it all, from action and horror to now superheroes and science fiction. Wan has signed on to direct feature films Aquaman and Robotech. Starring Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones) and written by Kurt Johnstad (300), Warner Bros.’ Aquaman, which centers on the underwater superhero from next year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, will likely begin filming in spring 2016 for release in 2018. Meanwhile, Sony’s Robotech, an adaptation of the 1980s anime featuring mechas, should follow some time after. [THR]
