Outlander Sneak Peeks: Claire and Geillis Face Certain Death

Claire (Caitriona Balfe) just can’t seem to catch a break. Two weeks after she escaped the dreaded Captain ‘Black Jack’ Randall (Tobias Menzies) at Fort William, and later engaged in some passionate lovemaking with her husband Jamie (Sam Heughan), it seems her life is yet again on the line in this week’s episode of Outlander.

We all knew Claire’s friendship with Geillis (Lotte Verbeek) and her problems with Laoghaire (Nell Hudson) would lead to nowhere good, but who would have thought Claire’d be accused of witchcraft as a result. Yet that’s where Claire and Geillis find themselves this week in ‘The Devil’s Mark,’ as they wait to stand trial and take the stand in front of a court of judges. Geillis seems to think Dougal will come and save her, but little does she know that her lover and Jamie have gone away on a trip. Now there’s no one left to help them.

Claire and Geillis are thrown into a pit and left to stew there for the night before they are brought before the “court” the following morning to face their accusers. Claire’s name and position at the castle aren’t enough to free her from these charges, and she’s terrified until she catches sight of a familiar face. Ned Gowan has arrived at the court (without support of the laird) to defend both women and his legal prowess is on display as he disputes the charges of each witness.

But witchcraft charges are difficult to beat and Claire clearly knows this. The two women bond in their cell at night and are shocked the next day when a witness that they expected to speak out against them actually admits he was wrong about Claire. But it doesn’t seem like that’s enough to help them (and may have even been a trick?). And so Ned presents them with a terrible choice: he thinks they can only save one of them.

Watch some new clips from the episode below, and don’t miss a new Outlander tonight at 9 p.m. on Starz.
