Season 5 of The Walking Dead may have ended last night, but the horror is just beginning for the city of Los Angeles. AMC has released the first promo for Fear the Walking Dead, which reveals the spinoff series is going back to the start of the zombie outbreak. Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams is about to take a trip away from Westeros and into the far reaches of space and time, with a guest-starring part on an episode of BBC America’s Doctor Who. Executive producer Steven Moffat won’t reveal who or what she’s playing, but did say, “She is going to challenge the Doctor in very unexpected ways. This time he might just be out of his depth, and we know Maisie is going to give him exactly the right sort of hell.” [TVLine]
The Mortal Instruments is getting a second chance on ABC Family. The cable network has given a 13-episode series order to Shadowhunters, a drama based on Cassandra Clare’s book series. Already a film released in 2013, the series follows Clary Fray as she discovers she comes from a long line of human-angel hybrids who hunt down demons. Ed Decter (Unforgettable) will serve as showrunner, with filming scheduled to begin this May in Toronto. [THR]
From Broadway to the small screen, Ciara Renée has joined The CW’s Arrow and The Flash spinoff as Hawkgirl aka Kendra Saunders. In the comics, Saunders is a young woman who has repeatedly been reincarnated over the centuries, becoming the warrior Hawkgirl whenever the need arises. Former cast members Wentworth Miller, Dominic Purcell, Brandon Routh, Victor Garber and Caity Lotz will also star in the potential series. [Deadline]
Another Doctor Who alum is getting into the superhero business. Arthur Darvill, who starred as Rory Williams opposite Karen Gillan’s Amy Pond in Doctor Who, is in final negotiations to join The CW’s Arrow and The Flash spinoff. He’ll play Rip Hunter, a roguish time traveler who hides the strains of being responsible for history itself behind a facade of charm and wit. The ensemble cast already includes Wentworth Miller, Dominic Purcell, Brandon Routh, Victor Garber, Caity Lotz and newly announced Broadway actress Ciara Renée. [TheWrap]
