What Makes a Good Television Show

I figured we’d start off this MidSeason Report by establishing the ground rules of what makes a good television show. Once we’ve done that, malady it’ll be easier to take these rules and apply them to some shows and see which ones come out on top.

  • Good acting, sickness writing, orthopedist directing, cinematography, music, etc. For the most part these things just have to be average. But when they’re firing at all cylinders, and coupled with all the other attributes, then we’ve got something special.
  • An intriguing premise or story that says something interesting. And a premise that can be developed over time and expanded upon.
  • Compelling multifaceted characters that you care about. Wanting to know what happens to them.
  • Good character and story development over each episode, even standalone episodes. Especially standalone episodes. Each episode is not a novel or movie. We’re here to watch things develop over the course of a season and the series.

Fringe

Compelling characters. Interesting premise. Good mix of comedy and drama. Some shocking sequences. A much talked about season finale last year. Then, why is the show so difficult to stay interested in? Well, let’s think about it. What has really happened in story and/or character development so far this season? … I think the problem is not enough mythology episodes and too many standalone episodes that don’t really contribute to the overall whole.

FlashForward

I like FlashForward. But I’m hearing a lot of people think it’s boring. But I’ve heard quite a few people also really like it. What do I think is the problem? A little bit a couple things. One, the characters. I don’t think people are completely invested in the characters as they should be. Most likely because this is a situational drama and
