Better to Have Loved and Lost…
NBC has cancelled its much talked about, but not watched, drama The Playboy Club, making it the first victim of the fall season. (FOX’s New Girl was the first pick up.)
The peacock network has also granted full seasons to Whitney and Up All Night, while comedy Free Agents was unceremoniously cancelled. And just when I was getting used to Anthony Stewart Head hanging around L.A… [Deadline, Deadline]
CBS has cancelled How To Be A Gentleman but mysteriously picked up its other comedy 2 Broke Girls. For those not aware, CBS’ 2 Broke Girls was created by Whitney Cummings who also stars in NBC’s Whitney. Now we know she must have some kind of blackmail on the two networks to get both of her awful shows renewed.
And The CW has cancelled its reality show H8R, but no one really cares. Who will the TV Grim Reaper visit next?
Coming Soon to a TV Near You
BBC’s Sherlock has no release date as of yet, but it must be getting closer because promotional materials have started to pop up. The city of Cannes held its annual MIPCOM, a tv and entertainment event, this past week, and a one sheet, promotional photos, and episode stills were released as a result. I can’t wait until we get an actual date! [1, 2, 3]
Set to premiere its third season within the next month, the British series Misfits has released its first photo of the new cast, which includes newcomer Joe Gilgun as Rudy. [Channel4]
Pretty Little Liars won’t return until January, but ABC Family has a special Halloween episode in store for us on October 19th. And now we have a look at some stills and the special Halloween-ified opening credits. [Zap2it, The Insider]
My other favorite ABC Family show, Switched at Birth is finally back on set filming the second half of its first season. Here’s to getting more episodes very soon! [ABCFsab]
It was ordered for midseason what feels like ages ago, but we finally have our first teaser for Tim Kring (Heroes) and Kiefer Sutherland’s new show, Touch. I still need to finish reading the pilot script, but the trailer looks really good. What do you think? [TVLine]
Don’t I Know You From Somewhere?
This season on The Vampire Diaries has been all about the Originals and now we’re going to meet Momma Original herself. Alice Evans has been cast as the matriarch of the family and will first be seen by flashback in episode 308. Interesting factoid: THe actress is married to Ringer‘s Ioan Gruffudd. Lucky girl! [Zap2it]
Speaking of Ringer, Sarah Michelle Gellar is about to have a mini-Buffy reunion when Amber Benson (Tara on BtVS) stops by in an upcoming episode as, get this, a stripper! [TVGuide]
With how long we’ve had to wait for the Oct. 23 premiere of Once Upon a Time, you’d think we wouldn’t care anymore. Nope! The show has just cast The X-Files and Deadwood alum Brad Dourif as a friend of Rumpelstiltskin. Updated: Emma Caulfield (BtVS) will also be doing a guest stint on the show as the witch from Hansel and Gretel. I can’t wait! [TVGuide, TVLine]
NBC’s Smash won’t premiere until February, but pop star Nick Jonas and Tony winner Bernadette Peters are set to guest star. [TVOvermind]
Paranormal Activity star Katie Featherston will be appearing for two episodes on ABC’s The River, a new series set to premiere midseason about an explorer who has disappeared in the Amazon. [EW]
Gimme More, More, More TV!
You may remember how much I wanted to see Ron Moore’s 17th Precinct get picked up to series. Well, unfortunately it didn’t work out, but hopefully the pilot Magicians, based on a fantasy book about magic, will have better luck. The pilot will be written by Ashley Miller & Zack Stentz (Thor and X-Men: First Class). [Deadline]
Listen up The X-Files and The West Wing fans: Jon Favreau, Roberto Orci, Seth Green & Michael Dougherty have sold a supernatural/political pilot to ABC. Ex-Comm was also given a put pilot commitment, so that’s usually a good sign we’ll see it on our TVs eventually. [Deadline]
A lot of you love the movies from The Coen Brothers, so you’ll be happy to know that Fox has bought the hourlong comedy HarveKarbo from the duo. This should be interesting. [Deadline]
Fox has also bought an ensemble drama from Kate Robin (Six Feet Under) and director Jake Kasdan about a female secret service agent protecting the First Lady. We definitely need more kick-ass female roles, so I’m definitely in. [Deadline]
I’m feeling kind of betrayed by this news since I found the Adjustment Bureau movie to be a lot like our fan favorite Fringe, but Syfy is now in the works to develop a TV version of said movie. I’m curious to see how this will end up working as a series. [Deadline]
Gratuitous Promotion of Movies
Steven Spielberg has been a bit MIA as of late, but get ready because his two new movies War Horse and Tin Tin have just released final trailers. Both movies will hit theaters in December. [Empire, MSN]
But if you’re in the mood for something a bit darker, the trailer for The Raven has also been released. I read the script for this movie last winter, and I can tell you it’s quite a fun ride. [ComingSoon]
Coming on Tuesday: The first theatrical trailer for The Avengers. [Facebook]

Currently bringing Hunger Games to the screen, Lionsgate will also be adapting Patrick Ness’ book trilogy Chaos Walking. I’ve started reading the first book, and it’s good. [Deadline]
Lionsgate is also moving in on Universal’s usual monster mash by creating a modern-day version of Frankenstein starring Aaron Eckhart and directed by Stuart Beattie. [Deadline]
Meanwhile, Robert Zemeckis has joined Universal for Charles Fort, a spooky feature in the vein of Ghostbusters. [HollywoodReporter]
Johnny Depp is already producing, but now he’s reportedly considering playing yet another quirky role as Dr. Seuss for Illumination and Universal. [HollywoodReporter]
It’s becoming the curse of Friday Night Lights stars: Making curious post-FNL career choices. This time it’s Zach Gilford, who will join Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Last Stand. [Deadline]
