Review: Don’t just spin theories. Get proof.

Some shows start off on the right track and then grow into their greatness. While other shows start off badly and end up growing into themselves. (The rest just die a miserable death.) Ringer‘s doing a good job at coming back from the brink, but will it last?

“If You Ever Want a French Lesson” was a step in the right direction for viewers like me who had been thinking about tuning out. There was a nice balance of mystery, suspense, and romance this week. So now, hopefully the writers can start giving us some answers.

Bridget: Andrew’s behind this?

Out of the frying pan, into the fire. Bridget thought she was making a good decision in hiding from mob boss Bodaway by taking over sister Siobhan’s seemingly perfect life. She just didn’t realize Siobhan had problems of her own. Turns out someone’s trying to kill her, too. But who?

Better the devil you know, than the devil you don’t. With Bodaway, Bridget at least knew who and why they were after her. Now, the best she can do is play amateur detective if she wants to continue being part of this stolen life she’s latched onto and find out who’s after her. And her first suspect is surprisingly Siobhan’s husband Andrew after she discovers the same picture from her attacker at Siobhan and Andrew’s house.

If this episode had aired right after the pilot, I could maybe have gone with Andrew being a possible suspect. As it is, last week’s episode gave us a much better look at how much of a sweet and loving husband Andrew could be. Still, appearances can be deceiving, right? I find it highly suspicious that Siobhan would insinuate to her divorce lawyer that Andrew abused her when that doesn’t seem to be the case. Was she trying to get more out of the divorce settlement by saying he’s an abuser and a cheat?

Malcolm: Why don’t you just let her go? She didn’t testify. She’s the reason you’re free. She’s not a problem as long as she doesn’t come back.
Bodaway: Exactly, I don’t like loose ends.
Malcolm: I told you. I don’t know where she is.

But poor Malcolm wins the award this week on Ringer for ‘worst time ever’ after he’s kidnapped by Bodaway and tortured into giving up Bridget’s whereabouts. Which he doesn’t do, mind you. Instead, the recovering addict gets an injection of drugs for his trouble. The scene was just a little too horrible for me to witness. Those guys mean business.

Andrew: The market’s turning around. I’d hate for you to miss out.
Henry:
Well yeah, I’ve been missing out on a lot lately.

Unlike the rest of us, Henry really isn’t happy to see “Siobhan” working things out with Andrew. (Really, is there anyone who still likes Bridget with Henry at this point?) He gives 1001 excuses for why he’s trying to take his shares out of Andrew’s company, but we all know it’s because he’s bitter about Siobhan. And his wife foils his plans again!

Bridget (as Siobahn): If we’re going to move forward, then I have to stop listening to other people… and trust you. And what you did for me today, it wasn’t that it wasn’t good enough. It was the nicest thing anyone’s ever done for me.
(unveils dress)
Andrew: You look beautiful.

Beware of Greeks bearing gifts. Did Bridget actually believe Siobhan’s husband would buy her a beautiful dress while trying to have her killed at the same time? That would be quite deceptive, but I guess stranger things have happened. Thankfully, his persona as a good guy holds up so far since Bridget finds out everyone and their mother in New York have that incriminating picture in their house. (I’m still suspicious though on whether Andrew and his partner at work had a fling.)

Now when is the topic of sex going to come up between Bridget (as Siobhan) and Andrew? I know they’re both busy people. But now that their relationship is on the mend, I think it’s just a matter of time. Do you think Andrew would notice the difference between Bridget and Siobhan? Or has too much time passed since the last time they’ve done the deed?

That was a gorgeous dress on Bridget, by the way. (It reminded me a bit of the dress on the Revenge promotional materials.) And I’m loving Bridget and Andrew together more and more each week.

Siobhan: Well, it’s getting late. I have to leave. But…if you ever want a french lesson.

I’m also starting to get into the idea of Siobhan with Henry. I’d thought maybe Siobhan didn’t really care about him, seeing as she just left him back in New York, but then she called him all the way from Paris after finding out she’s pregnant. Then again, we also saw her hooking up with a random guy a bit earlier. What do you think, was it just her pregnancy hormones doing the dialing?

And Siobhan seems so sure Henry is the father of her baby rather than Andrew. So does that mean Andrew should be so sure he isn’t? I’m glad we’re finally getting to see a bit more of Siobhan.

Next week:

Machado has somehow gotten his hands on Bridget’s message to Malcolm. And was that Gemma slapping Bridget? Shit’s going down next week.
