The second episode of a new series is never as good as the premiere, and this week’s Thundercats episode is no exception.
In the third episode, “Ramlak Rising,” the quest to find the Book of Omens is put on hold as Lion-O decides to instead avenge his father. After trying to cross the Sea of Sand, the team encounter the Fishmen, also interested in revenge and in search of a giant plant creature who drank their oasis home.
Thundercats (s01e03): Ramlak Rising
Lion-O: Rest now to rise again, Father.
Tygra: May your next life show you peace.
After all the upheaval from the first episode, everyone is now left to deal with the fallout and take the first steps towards their new journey. Only Lion-O isn’t quite ready to let go. As the new king, he has ordered Tygra, Cheetara, and Snarf, plus WileyKit and WileKat who begin following him, to go off in search of Mumm-ra.
I found myself increasingly frustrated with his demands, but it’s easy to forget he’s still young and inexperienced. And in the mean time, I love that we’re getting to see all kinds of different species as the team travel through Third Earth.
I’m also now, more than ever, shipping Tygra and Cheetara together. Lion-O just seems to be on a younger wavelength for the time being, and the two have more in common as his sidekicks. Of course, that could change at any moment.
The episode then ended with a surprise twist when we learn Mumm-Ra and Grune have taken a prisoner from the battle in the premiere. Jaga is being held captive in a lantern, and they’re going to probe his mind to find the Book of Omens. Mumm-ra is so creepy.
This show interestingly is able to cater to both the young and old crowd. There’s enough mystery and serious storytelling for the adults. While there’s also enough action and moral tales for the kiddies. It’s the best of both worlds. Of course, the best part for me was learning the theme song remains the same from the 80’s version, albeit with no words. My inner child is now very happy.
