Radar Watch: Ninja Turtles and Daredevil Begin Development, Jamie Campbell Bower Cast in Mortal Instruments and more!

Yeah, I know it’s summer and entertainment news might be a little slower until it kicks back up again in July, but there’s still plenty of juicy movie and television tidbits to talk about.

There’s a few movies with geek cred beginning development, there’s been a few important casting notices, British tv continues to take over the airwaves, and our summer premieres began this past week. It’s pretty frickin’ cold still in Los Angeles, but that doesn’t stop summer from rolling in. Yay, it’s June!

This was a bit of a geek week in terms of announcements. Not only did a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot movie begin development, but the new Daredevil reboot movie, tentatively to be directed by David Slade, was assigned a writer. Brad Caleb Kane, who some may remember as Tucker from the BtVS Prom episode and the singing voice of Aladdin, will be writing the screenplay based on Daredevil’s ‘Born Again’ story.

Also, Lost’s Damon Lindelof made a seven figure deal with Disney for a new top secret sci-fi movie with the working title 1952. No word on what it’ll be about, but it must be big since they’re talking about it having reach outside of just a movie.

Jamie Campbell Bower has been cast as the male lead inĀ The Mortal Instruments, one of the next big literary franchises. That makes three book franchises for him now after already having supporting parts in Harry Potter and Twilight. And he’s also currently starring in Starz’ series Camelot as King Arthur if you want to call that another literary franchise. I was a bit skeptical about his casting, but after reading the words of the books’ author, I’m willing to wait and let them convince me.

And another lead role of a literary franchise was cast as Donald Sutherland will be playing President Snow in The Hunger Games.

The first annual Critic’s Choice Television Awards, yup nominated by journalists and critics, announced their nominees this week for television. Included on the list were Fringe, The Walking Dead, The Killing, Mad Men, Game of Thrones, Dexter, Friday Night Lights, etc. The winners will be announced June 20th.

Fresh off of V, Firefly’s Morena Baccarin has moved on to Homeland with Claire Danes. I’m really excited to see X-Files’ Howard Gordon’s new series.

I’d heard some rumors this past week that they were having some problems renewing Doctor Who for another season and the actors were having to find other work. Well, I’m happy to say any problems have apparently been resolved, because both the BBC and Moffat tweeted the Doctor will be back for another fourteen episodes next year. Everyone can relax and rest easy now.

In other British tv news, it’s been announced that the critically acclaimed show Misfits will soon be coming to Hulu. This makes me really excited, because now I have a place to point all the Americans who haven’t seen it yet.

Don’t forget to check out the British series Luther’s second season and the return of Pretty Little Liars this Tuesday. And if you haven’t caught up on Luther yet, you can find the first season on Netflix Instant Watch.

Well, that’s everything on my radar from the past two weeks. Excited for any of these reboots? What will you be watching this summer?
