It’s been an unusually quiet week in pilot and fall 2011 news. My guess is that the completed pilots are trickling in to the networks, so there’ll be little news until the schedules are finally released at May upfronts in just a few weeks. The hard part is over, as they say, and now we wait.
To balance out the quiet though, this summer’s most awaited shows, which also happen to be British for me, are beginning to get more buzz as new teasers are being released. But first, some exciting new trailers and movie deals.
Probably the most exciting news of the week, the trailer for Harry Potter 7.5 is now out! After seeing how many views it got in such a short amount of time, there’s no doubt it’s the most anticipated movie of the year. In just a few more months we’ll be saying goodbye to Harry Potter and the most important story of our generation. Are you weeping yet?
Another trailer that has me excited is for X-Men: First Class. I’d thought maybe everyone’s excitement for the first trailer was a fluke, but this one seems to be getting the same level of interest. Now maybe the movie will be good, and maybe it won’t, but at least the trailers are definitely working for it. I’m worried though about how many cooks they had in the writing kitchen. A bunch of writers vying for credit doesn’t usually bode well. Still, this is my favorite superhero franchise, so I’ll continue to be excited until I see otherwise.
Another one of my favorite franchises got a leap forward this week, too. Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed on to come back for another Terminator. I’m a huge fan of the first two movies, and the FOX series with Summer Glau, but I can do without the two most recent movies. Yes, sequels don’t usually turn out well, and it didn’t help the third movie to be good, but seeing Arnold again in the role will be exciting. Justin Lin is set to direct. I was hoping Joss Whedon would buy the rights like he wanted, but we’ll just have to wait and see what comes from this new deal. (Scared.)
Joss Whedon’s Cabin in the Woods is also finally out of the bankruptcy pits of MGM and has been bought by Lionsgate. It’s not for certain yet, but it looks like they’re eyeing a Halloween 2011 release. That’s so close! I hope it does well and cooks up some publicity for Avengers, which will be the real test for Whedon. (Especially, if the script does end up getting released from this thief.).
Moving on to television, while there hasn’t been any pilot news this week, the CW’s schedule got a little clearer. The CW has decided to renew most of it’s current lineup including: Gossip Girl, Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries, 90210, and a first-ever all-star edition of America’s Next Top Model. No word yet on fan-favorite Nikita, but I’m not really too worried judging by all the buzz online about it.
After being renewed for another season a few weeks back, Fringe is preparing for its season finale this Friday. EOnline has an interesting look at those special trailers we see released every so often and the ingenious man behind them.
Moving on to this summer’s returning series and Doctor Who spinoff, Torchwood. The BBC has released another teaser this week with voiceovers that is much better than the last one. There’s also some small clips from BBC’s upcoming series Doctor Who, Luther, and Torcwhood in their new BBC trailer. Excited!
And speaking of the Dr. Who/Torchwood verse, it was an excellent premiere episode of Dr. Who last Saturday and another excellent episode this week. So, don’t forget to continue watching the show, or check it out if you’ve never seen it before. May I suggest starting with last season though, if you haven’t seen it, before getting into this season.
I know, I know, a lot of talk about British television. The TV Addict has an interesting article on how British TV has been taking over America in the last few years. I mean, you don’t have to look much further than people’s Top 10 lists from last year to know something strange is happening. On my list from last year was Sherlock and Misfits. And so far this year, I’ve had a great time catching up on the last season’s of Doctor Who, Torchwood, and Luther. Now I’m eagerly awaiting the new seasons for all five of those series.
The Brits know they’ve got hits on their hands, too. Their BAFTA nominations came out this week and on the list are the usual fan favorite US series: Mad Men and Glee, plus two new additions: Boardwalk Empire and The Killing. However, if I may suggest, please check out the British series I’ve listed above and those nominated: Misfits (leading the nominations with 4), Doctor Who, and Sherlock.
Now, before I let you go, we’ve received the first signs of life from the production on season 2 of Sherlock. It begins. Excited? Yes!
i didn’t know there was going to be another terminator movie. that’s exciting! i’ll see it, even though i didn’t really like the third or fourth movies. i wanted to like salvation but the future was just so different than how i pictured it that i was disappointed.
Well, it was just announced this week, so it’s still new. I’m just scared they’re going to ef it up again. Salvation just wasn’t good and didn’t really tie in well. Have you seen the FOX series? You should check it out.
I can’t wait for new Sherlock! I think it was a bit cruel only making those three episodes last time, especially considering the way it ended, and I was hoping for more episodes this time, but I think they’re just making another three? Why not a full series? : (
Me too! Yup, they’re still just making another three. British seasons are shorter than ours, sadly, and they take longer to come out! Torture! They’re more like miniseries. Still, other shows have more episodes than this!
