Caprica (s1ep09): End of Line – ****
SPOILERS BELOW
Previously: Daniel Graystone is getting increasingly frustrated as he keeps failing to recreate the robot that’s made the government excited. Zoe is still in that robot body and is trying to get Lacy to help her transport it to Geminon to serve some higher purpose. Lacy as a result is problematically getting in deeper with the STO in order to help Zoe. Meanwhile, Amanda has been getting more and more suspicious of her husband, which doesn’t help her already crumbling sanity. And Joseph Adama is neglecting everything in order to search for his daughter in New Cap City.
Daniel: Daniel’s stress tolerance is finally put to the limit as the government gives him til next week to reproduce the Zoe-bot. He decides the best way to proceed is for Philomon to wipe the chip clean tomorrow so they can start over. This leads to disastrous consequences as Zoe goes into self preservation mode.
Zoe: Zoe has some sweet moments with Philomon early in the episode and I really wanted those crazy kids to work it out later in the season. But the writers had other plans. Lacy has already told Zoe she needs more time, and thus essentially failed her, when Philomon goes to wipe the chip clean. Zoe speaks for the first time to him in an effort to save herself. She tries to explain, but Philomon just sees crazy robot. Zoe flings into a steel pillar to stop him and kills him. Sadness. They were cute. This leads to Zoe in a car chase as she heads out for parts unknown with the police in pursuit.
Lacy: Meanwhile Lacy is following Barbanus’ orders so he’ll help her with Zoe and unknowingly puts a bomb in Clarice’s car. She’s later forced to push the button on the explosive or die and not be able to help Zoe. She pushes the button. Poor Lacy has gone in over her head.
Amanda: Amanda is going further and further into depression. And as she says to Daniel, he was the one to help keep her sanity last time. Unfortunately this time he’s too preoccupied with all his problems to notice her downward spiral. She makes one last call for help when she calls on Clarice. But Clarice is also busy with her own problems, mainly getting to Geminon, to be of any help. So, Amanda goes to the top of a bridge and the last we see she’s apparently jumped off.
Clarice: Clarice and one of her husbands are on their way to leave for Geminon when she sees Amanda at the top of a bridge. She gets out of the car and then it explodes. My first thought is that just as she believes God is speaking to her through Amanda, it seems God has a plan for her and saved her from death.
Joseph: Joseph continues to search New Cap City for Tamara. When he finally finds her she tells him he’s too invested in finding her and she shoots him so he’ll never be able to come back.
The end: Zoe-bot drives through a barricade of police and her van explodes. Daniel gets a call after we see Amanda jump off the bridge.
Addendum: Is Amanda dead? Unlikely. Could Zoe’s robot body be gone? Possible. Will we miss Zoe and Philomon? Most likely. This episode has a lot of storyline resolutions, but not any new answers. I think the show is spreading itself too thin and needs to come back as a more cohesive and focused whole.
There’s just something about Joss Whedon that we all love. And I’m pretty sure it’s for what’s up in his noggin, check whether it be his sarcastic humor, buy passion for humanitarian efforts, or just your love for his work. So, yeah. I’m pretty sure it’s his brain. Unless you’re Neil Cameron and creating The A-Z of Awesomeness. Then, you might love…something else. Get your mind out of the gutter! Well, not completely out of the gutter.
io9 had an article today about the essence of the “F*@% Yeah” Moment. Basically, the moment where a character’s actions made you say…well, that. There’s some mention of Battlestar Galactica, Firefly and Serenity (River kicks the Reavers’ ass!). But when I’m thinking of F*@% Yeah moments I have to say Buffy in ‘Anne’ or ‘Showtime’. What are your favorite F*@% Yeah moments? Kudo points if you choose a Whedon show.
EOnline is having their annual ‘Save One Show’ campaign and I just really wanted to vote for FlashForward cause I know everyone else will be voting elsewhere. But apparently according to TVAddict I can’t, otherwise it’d be a wasted vote. They’ve narrowed down all the options to only the ones that have a chance: Chuck, Life Unexpected, Mercy, Sons of Tucson and V. Looks like I’ll be choosing Life Unexpected then.
It’s funny that there are so many shows possibly getting the axe, but then there’s always something coming down the pipeline. I’m excited that Stargate Universe comes back this Friday and the Baltimore Sun said: “Since Battlestar Galactica ended, this has taken the throne for my favorite show. The characters are complex and their situations leave your heart pumping and fists clenching for more.” Yay! And I hear aliens are coming. Oh, oh. And word is Vampire Diaries will be on DVD in August. Which feels like a long time from now, but word. Five months til you’re in my hands, my pretty. And although I’ve never seen it still, I’m sure many of you will be happy to hear that Castle (Captain Tight Pants!) has been renewed for a third season.
Then, this July we have Syfy’s Haven with Eric Balfour (Jesse from BtVS) based on Stephen King’s novella “The Colorado Kid”. And in June, ABC’s Scoundrels about a family of small-time crooks who decide to go legit after their father lands in jail. Also in July, USA’s Covert Affairs about a young CIA trainee who is thrust into the inner sanctum of the agency when she is unexpectedly promoted to field operative. And amusingly enough, Christopher Gohram (Jake 2.0.) will be back in this, another spy show. Yay! for summer tv.
Then, let’s not forget about this fall. The spy genre adds Michaela McManus (One Tree Hill) and Scott Porter (Friday Night Lights, Caprica) on The CW’s Nomads, about a group of nearly broke young backpackers abroad who agree to earn money by working secret missions for the CIA. There’s just something about spies that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside and thinking, ‘tv escapism’. And Summer Glau may be back on NBC’s The Cape about a former cop framed for a crime he didn’t commit who becomes The Cape, a masked hero, to clear his name.
And not really my cup of tea, but Treat Williams (Everwood), Katee Sackhoff (BSG), and Goran Visnjic (ER) are back on ABC’s Boston’s Finest about a detective who teams with Angus Martin, a disgraced ex-cop to solve crimes and untangle the conspiracy that sent him underground. And Caroline Dhavernas (Wonderfalls) is back on ABC’s Off the Map about three doctors who leave the comfort of the U.S. to work at an isolated tropical clinic.
Most of these shows have already finished filming, but sadly we won’t know til May which of these will make the cut past pilot to become a series. And then sometime this summer we’ll hopefully get an early screener of those that did make it. Coming to a torrent and computer near you.
AMC has already committed to six episodes of it’s zombie (yum, yum) series The Walking Dead. Which apparently it’s six episode order is not a slam, since all their new shows have gotten the same. Yay! Zombies. I hear the comic is at least good.
I don’t know how many people saw Summit’s Push with Chris Evans and Dakota Fanning? I saw it and while I didn’t think it was awesome, I did like the concept and style. Well, guess what? Summit (Twilight, The Hurt Locker) is making their first foray into television with a Push tv show. Yay? And on Chris Evans, did you realize he’s been in this many comic book movies?
And I know you’re all thinking we don’t need any more Terminator movies. And I, even being a huge T fan, would normally agree. But because I’m a huge T fan, this news on two more possible movies made me *squee*. What? I’m weak. Speaking of Terminator, another interview with Zack Whedon on the comic book series he’s been writing. You can never have enough Whedon.
And also because I’m weak, normally the thought of Stephenie Meyer inflicting torture on us fans with another possible Breaking Dawn would have me running away, I’m actually curious about her latest Twilight: Eclipse novella to be released on June 5th. (Just in time for Twilight: Eclipse movie, no doubt.) And while I’d really rather be reading Midnight Sun, as you’ve all agreed, I’m just glad to get something else from the Twilightverse. Unless…it turns out to be another Breaking Dawn. Then, you can all laugh and say you told me so.
Zombies are becoming reality via H1N1 shots. Be prepared. These ARE the end days.
It’s a good thing I haven’t gotten any of those then.
